Dixon and Neve get married in a quiet ceremony, Jenni and Oliver annul their marriage (but agree to keep dating). Jim and Margot get engaged (after Margot reconciles with her family).
Long Ending:
Jim (Will Ferrell), who is a widower, learns that his young adult daughter (who he treats as his best friend) Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan) is engaged to her new boyfriend Oliver (Stony Blyden). The pair are extremely close as Jim’s wife/Jenni’s mom passed away when Jenni was young. At Jenni’s request, Jim calls to reserve a resort located on a small island on a lake where he and Jenni’s mom got married so that Jenni and Oliver can get married there. After the call, the owner passes away suddenly before completing the reservation into their system. A short time later, a woman named Margot (Reese Witherspoon), who is estranged from most of her family, learns her younger sister/best friend Neve (Meredith Hagner) is engaged to her stripper boyfriend Dixon (Jimmy Tatro). She ends up booking the same island resort on the same weekend. The resort is meaningful to them as they spent happy summers there with their now-deceased aunt (who was a resident of the island).

Both sets of families arrive and overwhelm the new owner, Leslie (Jack McBrayer). Jim and Margot agree to split the venue, with the agreement for Jenni to get married during the first half of sunset and Neve to get married during the second half. Each family deals with their respective issues. Jim is worried about being abandoned by the only person on Earth who he loves, and is upset to learn she and Oliver plan to move away after the wedding. Jenni appears to be rushing into being married young to follow in the footsteps of her parents, and she and Oliver also keep learning new things about the other over the weekend that they don’t exactly like. Margot clearly has distanced herself from her family (not even knowing the names of all her other siblings’ kids), and passively-aggressively argues with her stern mother Flora (Celia Weston). She also learns that Neve is pregnant and trying to keep it secret.

At times, Jim and Margot bond over their shared feelings of fear of abandonment. At other times, often out of jealousy or misplaced anger, they try to sabotage the other’s event. After Jim overhears Margot mocking his extremely close relationship with Jenni (as well as his hair cutting and baking skills), Jim snaps and forces Jenni and Oliver’s marriage service to go over time. As Margot rushes her family out to the sunset pier for Neve’s service, a boat captain Jim paid to splash them accidentally runs into the dock and causes it to collapse (plunging Margot, Neve, Dixon, and their family into the lake). This stops Neve and Dixon from getting married. Later that night, Margot witnesses two people kissing in the dark and assumes that it’s Oliver cheating (it’s actually a groomsman wearing the same headphones as Oliver wears) and tells Jim. Hoping to get his daughter back, Jim foolishly announces that Oliver cheated during the wedding party. Jenni and Oliver get into a huge fight and decide to leave the island even after Jim’s claims of infidelity are disproven.

Meanwhile, Margot reconciles with her family (her mother saying that while she doesn’t relate to Margot as well as she does to her other kids, she wants to try before it’s too late). Neve tells her family of the pregnancy (and the family embrace her rather than shame her). She and Dixon get married in a small, private ceremony (which is what Neve wanted anyways). When Margot returns to her room, she finds Jim waiting there with an alligator to get revenge. However, realizing he’s gone way too far, Jim wrestles the alligator and throws it out the window (but not before it nips Margot). Dixon, who also is training to be a nurse, treats her wound (thus endearing himself to the whole family). Margot and Jim then reconcile as well, with her helping Jim build some self-reliance and he helping Margot to find ways to relate to her family. Margot then gets a social media alert on her phone that Jenni and Oliver are breaking up. They rush off to stop the pair.

When they arrive, they find Jenni and Oliver OK. Although wanting to annul the marriage, they plan to continue dating so that they can continue to learn more about each other (and find out if they are a great match) while still pursuing their respective career interests and growing as people. Before leaving, Jenni tells Margot that Jim has a crush on her. As Margot reflects, she realizes that Jim had been flirting with her (although in very odd ways given how long it’s been since he dated). She decides she likes him too and they start dating. About a year later, Jim does a surprise proposal to Margot in front of their family. Margot is clearly closer to them and even knows the names of all her nieces and nephews. Jenni and Oliver are still dating too. As they pose for a photo, Margot suggests they consider eloping.

There are small roles for Fortune Feimster, Bobby Moynihan, Nick Jonas, Wyatt Russell, Nick Jonas and Peyton Manning.
