The opening text states that, for the last three years, premarital sex has been outlawed in the United States to preserve traditional values in what is known as a “Chastity Mandate”, except for one night a year. A company named Rexton Labs has given everyone wrist tattoos that change colors when the yearly 12-hour Exemption Period commences.

In New York City on the day of the Exemption Period, Owen (Callum Turner) runs a pizza shop, Claremont’s. He plans to sleep with his girlfriend Mallica (Maya Hawke), but when they meet at a sushi restaurant, she tells Owen her intentions to sleep with someone else in their building. Meanwhile, Allie (Monica Barbaro) is a singer who does songs for commercials, like recording a cover of “Brave” by Sara Bareilles for a psoriasis medication ad, or “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton for a vagina cream.

Once the Exemption Period begins, everyone around the city goes into full horny mode. Allie goes out with her friend Jacinta (King Princess) to try and find good guys to hook up with, but Jacinta quickly meets a prince named Tejan (Okieriete Onaodowan) and leaves to be with him. Allie returns to her apartment, where her roommate Arya (Quintessa Swindell) gives her a sexier dress to wear.

Owen goes to his mother Linda’s (Molly Ringwald) apartment to vent about Mallica, but Linda tells him she needs him to beat it so that she can spend the night with her partner Rick (LeVar Burton). Owen and Allie run into each other on the street and have a meet-cute, which is ruined when Owen barfs up the sushi he just ate. He walks onto a film set and interrupts a scene between two actors (Pete Davidson and Bobby Cannavale) before going to a bar. Owen strikes up a conversation with the bartender, Skye (Julia Fox), who agrees to hook up with him after her shift is over in 30 minutes.

Owen runs around the area trying to find a condom, but everywhere is sold out. Allie goes to a bar and meets a ton of creeps and weirdos before finding a guy who plays “All Out of Love” on the piano with her. They make out in the closet before Allie agrees to have sex with him.

Owen and Allie both end up at the same convenience store to find the last available condom on display for $200. They both try to take money out of the ATM but are unsuccessful. Allie then hooks the statue up to her date’s motorcycle so that he can yank it out of the store. Owen then joins her in running away with the statue. They stop somewhere to flip for the condom, only to drop it down a drain. They manage to get it out, but Owen lets Allie take it.

Owen gets a notification on a dating app from a woman named Sophie (Sydney Cole Alexander) to hook up with her in the park. Owen meets her there, but Sophie tricks him into letting her tie him up to the tree so that she can rob him.

Allie goes to her date’s apartment, but the cops barge in before they can start having sex. Allie tries to hide while half-naked but the cops tell them they only want her date because he violated his parole numerous times by having sex outside of the Exemption Period. Allie has to speak to a detective at the station before being released.

Owen ends up at the station with Allie after the police find him, but he manages to get his stuff back after Sophie is (presumably) caught. After they leave the station together, they banter some more and prepare to go their separate ways until they see three people talking about heading toward some crazy party. Owen and Allie sneakily follow them to try and reach the location.

When the two arrive, they are picked up by a van and transported to the party. The bouncers (Ziwe and Este Haim) do not allow Owen in because he comes off too “thirsty”, while Allie is allowed entry. A woman named Vivian (Elle Loudon) sees Owen and convinces the bouncers to let him in. While at the party, Allie sees an artist she likes, Ezra Stone (Charlie Gillespie). He meets with her, Owen, and Vivian, and after it is revealed that Allie sings, they convince her to go up onstage and sing “Only You”, which earns her cheers.

Owen goes off to sleep with Vivian, while Allie decides to hook up with Ezra. Ezra brings Allie back to his place, but he tries to show off by singing to her while naked and on top of a piano, and he falls and smashes his face. Meanwhile, Owen makes the mistake of bringing Vivian back to his mother’s apartment, so Linda and Rick catch them, and Vivian is now turned off by the whole experience.

Allie leaves the hospital after taking Ezra. She ends up at Claremont’s, where Owen has retreated to as well. Owen makes a cheese pizza for them to share, and they discuss the things they miss about casual sex. As they realize that they are starting to fall for each other, Owen gets a call from Mallica, who has changed her mind and wants to be with him. Owen decides to go to her.

Owen returns to Mallica, but after just a few moments, he realizes he’s made a mistake. He goes by Allie’s building to try and reach her, but she is not there. When Allie does return home, she learns from Troy (Mateo Ray), the kid across the street that Arya is babysitting, that Owen was around and was calling for her and mentioning all the things he’s learned about her over the night. Allie believes she knows where Owen will be.

Allie finds Owen by a lighthouse, since she had mentioned liking them. He has coffees ready for them, and they admit their feelings to each other and kiss. They go to the top of the lighthouse since there is still time in the Exemption Period, but they ultimately decide they should just wait a year. They go outside and kiss again and find out that they accidentally stumbled into a commercial shoot for a psoriasis medication commercial, using Allie’s cover of “Brave”. Allie and Owen kiss per the director’s commands, and then dance.

One year later, Allie and Owen are still together. As the next Exemption Period begins, they joke about what to order for dinner until they go into their room to finally seal the deal.
