The film opens with a young man named Elliot (Cooper Hoffman), dressed in lingerie and walking outside with a bloody nose. He finds his boss Erika Tracy (Olivia Wilde) unconscious, nude, and facedown in a pool. After calling 911, Elliot is interrogated by Detectives Zem and Zola (Johnny Knoxville and Margaret Cho) about his relationship with Erika.

Nine (and a half) weeks earlier, Elliot began working at Erika’s art studio as her assistant. He befriended fellow assistant Zap (Mason Gooding) while being instructed by Erika’s business manager Vikktor (Daveed Diggs) to chew gum and stick it to an art piece of a vagina. Elliot lives with his best friend Apple (Chase Sui Wonders) and is dating Minerva (Charli XCX), who is uninterested in sex and focuses on her work, and is overall an unpleasant person. Elliot is also rather obsessed with sex.

Erika calls Elliot into her office. She tells him that she has noticed him looking at her, initially saying it is making her uncomfortable, but she is just teasing him. Erika also asks Elliot questions about his personal life, like if he has a girlfriend who won’t mind if they had sex. She then instructs him to crawl on the floor towards her. Erika later has Elliot follow her home to move a piece of art, while also expressing her views on sex and saying how Gen Z is so sexually repressed and sensitive to the subject. Elliot later goes home and masturbates to Erika.

Erika eventually convinces Elliot to ender a BDSM relationship with her, where he is her sub, and Apple is jealous of the dynamic. Elliot starts to develop genuine feelings for Erika, but Vikktor issues him a subtle warning about taking things too far with her, saying Elliot is “not the first”.

Elliot later has underwhelming sex with Minerva and is only able to get through it after imagining Erika and him in a S&M scenario. Erika later calls Elliot to meet with a friend of hers, Yvette (Roxane Mesquida), and to have sex with her to make up for forgetting her birthday. Elliot goes to meet Yvette, but she orders him to leave after being turned off by him and his lack of understanding of eroticism.

Elliot breaks up with Minerva over the phone, though she could not care less. Erika later takes Elliot out to dinner, where he discusses his own feelings of sex throughout his life. She later tells him to invite a friend over for a threesome, so he tells Apple, who has been wanting a sexual experience like this recently. They go to Erika’s place, where she starts to seduce Apple, and then gets her and Elliot to kiss each other. When Erika ties Elliot up to go down on Apple, he starts to voice his discomfort and ruins the whole mood. Apple is embarrassed and starts crying. Elliot goes to Minerva’s place to try and find closure with her, only to discover she is with a naked man.

Apple makes Elliot move out of the apartment. He crashes with Zap but also stays in his car due to Zap’s personal rules about needing the place to himself.

The studio holds an event for Erika’s art show, with Elliot, Zap, and Vikktor in attendance. Erika tries to initiate another sexual encounter with Elliot in the ladies room, but Zap makes him get out. Other guests appear to be disinterested with Erika’s work. Elliot is then horrified to see video footage of his encounters with Erika on display at the show. He drunkenly yells at Erika and gets thrown out by Vikktor.

After Elliot is fired, Erika later calls him to her home to apologize. They get drunk and end up in an aggressive sexual encounter, where Elliot blacks out. That’s when he wakes up and stumbles outside after smashing his face onto the glass door to find Erika unconscious. He tries to do CPR and then goes inside to call 911. When he turns around, Erika has completely disappeared.

Erika is reported missing or possibly murdered, leading Elliot to become a suspect and him being interrogated. After seeing there is no evidence to suggest he had anything to do with Erika’s disappearance, the detectives let him go.

Erika later turns up at Zap’s apartment to visit Elliot. She reveals she and Vikktor set the whole thing up, from making Elliot cause a scene at her show, to framing him for her disappearance. The results have led to all the works from her exhibition to sell out and earn her a fortune. Elliot is pissed at the betrayal, but Erika encourages him to use the scandal to his advantage.

Two years later, Elliot is now a successful podcast host working with Zap. He brings Erika as a guest on the show, as she has come out with a book about the whole disappearance scandal and even dedicated a chapter in the book to Elliot. She is now in a relationship with another guy, but promises to stay in touch with Elliot.

Another two years go by, and Elliot and Erika appear to be getting married. After they kiss, Erika’s face gruesomely melts. Erika and Elliot then wake up in separate beds, as if they just experienced the same nightmare.
