Mike Edwards (Elvis Presley) and his flying partner Danny Burke (Gary Lockwood) are crop duster pilots working in a rural area. Danny has run up heavy gambling debts and used money that was meant to cover what they owe. A local sheriff arrives and seizes their plane named Bessie. The sheriff gives them one week to come up with the money or lose the plane for good.

With no transportation and no clear plan Mike and Danny start hitchhiking. They are picked up by apple farmer Walter Ling (Kam Tong) who is traveling with his 7-year-old niece Sue Lin (Vicky Tiu). Walter is headed to Seattle for the 1962 Worlds Fair. Mike and Danny ride along and eventually reach Seattle.

Walter is called away on business soon after arriving. Danny convinces Mike to take Sue Lin to the Worlds Fair while they wait for Walter to return. Mike and Sue Lin explore the fair together. Sue Lin eats too much junk food and feels ill. Mike takes her to the medical clinic on the fairgrounds.

At the clinic Mike meets nurse Diane Warren (Joan O’Brien). He is immediately interested in her but she keeps him at a distance. Wanting to see her again Mike pays a young boy to kick him in the shin so he will need medical attention. Diane treats him again and her supervisor convinces her to give Mike a ride back to his apartment believing he is badly injured.

Mike and Diane spend time together and grow closer. They go out together including a dinner at the Space Needle restaurant. Mike also flirts with another woman named Dorothy Johnson (Yvonne Craig) whom he meets at the fair. Meanwhile Danny focuses on gambling and trying to win enough money to get the plane back.

Walter fails to return as expected leaving Sue Lin still in Mikes care. Sue Lin pretends to be sick so Diane will come to Mike’s apartment. When Diane arrives, she realizes Mike is not related to the child. She becomes upset and considers calling the welfare board to report the situation.

Mike insists he is trying to do the right thing. He agrees to help his friend Vince Bradley (H.M. Wynant) with a dangerous night delivery by plane. The job involves flying valuable smuggled furs after dark. Mike successfully completes the flight earning enough money to solve his main problems.

Walter finally returns to reclaim Sue Lin. Mike and Danny are able to settle their debts and regain their plane. Mike proves he can be responsible and dependable. Diane sees this change and reconciles with him.

The film ends with Mike and Diane together and the plane secured as the Worlds Fair continues in the background.
