Heaven's Prisoners

Pooper:
Claudette (Teri Hatcher) was the mastermind behind the hit against Dave (Alec Baldwin) in which Annie (Kelly Lynch) was killed. Bubba (Eric Roberts) kills her and spares Dave. Robin (Mary Stuart Masterson) leaves him, so he goes home to tend to Alafair (Samantha Lagpacan) by himself.
Longer version:
Overcoming his alcohol relapse, the grief over the death of his wife Annie, and the tremendous guilt of not being able to prevent her murder, Dave finds out about the men involved in the hit and sets out to get revenge against them. The first one he comes across, “Toot” (Carl A. McGee), dies of his own misfortune when Dave chases him against a passing streetcar that runs him over. The other one -who happens to be Keats (Don Starks)- is murdered by someone else before Dave can get a hold of him.

Meanwhile, local mobster Didi Giancano (Joe Viterelli) questions, separately, drug dealer Bubba and his wife Claudette, about the vendetta Dave is conducting and how it could escalate into a feud with the local underworld, for which they both reassure him that it will not be allowed to happen; Giancano is particularly dismissive of Claudette, whom he sees as a “shameless whore” -owing to her past as a prostitute and exotic dancer-, but she defends herself as “a businesswoman who learned well from her late mother”. In his obsessive quest, Dave and Bubba confront each other and end up fist-fighting, as Bubba believes he is sleeping with Claudette, but they make amends, as they share a history as old friends from their days in New Iberia.

Dave learns from Batist (Badja Djola) about the last of the three killers, Victor Romero (Hawthorne James), who had come earlier to Dave’s house to taunt Annie and Alafair and is also seen mocking Dave himself on the phone, over the deed of having killed Annie. A fierce persecution ensues, with Victor seemingly dodging Dave. The chase comes to a climax in the attic of a house where Dave and Victor shoot at each other through the roof, which collapses and Victor is mortally injured. Before he dies, Dave grills him over the murder and Victor admits he acted under orders.

Putting the pieces together, Dave suspects Bubba himself ordered the hit and goes back to his house to confront him, only to discover that it was actually Claudette who did it; she dismissively laughs at him and justifies herself as intending to eventually kill Bubba and take over his business. Bubba overhears this and shoots her dead. A dumbfounded Dave calls the Police on the spot to report the incident while Bubba threateningly points the gun at him, thinking Dave will denounce him. Instead, Dave claims it was the work of an intruder, which leaves them both even and Bubba lets him go.

In the end, he returns home to discover that Robin, fed up with all the violence and danger, and his personal problems, has left him for good; he is last seen alone, taking care of Alafair, intending to raise her as a daughter.
